This exciting, three-year degree course is specifically designed to equip you with the key photographic skills and depth of knowledge required for a career in photojournalism. You will be taught by a professional team of experienced specialists, who combine industry knowledge with theoretical expertise. Relevant work experience opportunities are offered through the opportunity to undertake ‘live briefs’ and professional commissions. To develop your technical skills you will have access to state of the art equipment and facilities.

What you do

The Photojournalism award is designed to introduce you to the main issues and concerns relating to Photojournalistic practice today. Technical skills development in Photoshop and the advanced use of professional digital cameras is combined with an academic understanding of the historical debates and critical theories of photojournalistic practice. You will also learn about the professional practice of the photojournalist by developing your knowledge of the ethical positions and legislative procedures that inform the field.

The award offers you the chance to experience the industry first-hand through work placements and ‘live briefs’ in this exciting industry. The final year of your award offers you the opportunity to propose and direct your own photojournalistic project, which will form the basis of your final Degree Show and portfolio. In addition to visual work you will research a project around your chosen area of study. You also have the opportunity to undertake ‘careers and enterprise’ modules, which equip you with key skills required to succeed within a competitive job-market. Further professional development also includes areas such as; developing your own website or producing video or audio news.

All applicants are individually assessed on their qualifications, skills and experience. However a typical three A level or BTEC National Diploma offer will be 200 UCAS tarriff points.

Money is at the heart of the matter for most students, so managing your budget is vital. Fees for UK and EU full-time undergrauates on degree, HND and Foundation courses are £3,145 for the 2008/2009 academic year. Click here for further information regarding tuition fees.

Work placements are around £1,000 a year. We’ll use some of the additional income received from tuition fees to improve student support and facilities.
Student Loans for Fees

Eligible students won’t have to pay fees before studying. You’ll repay them after you have left university and earning more than £15,000 a year. The government will write off all student loan balances left unpaid 25 years after they have left their course. There is an age restriction on eligibility, currently 50 at the start of the course.
Postgraduate Student Fees

Postgraduate taught and research fees set out are the price of each stage of the awards, and guaranteed for that stage only, provided there is no break in study.

Students starting a new full-time course after successfully completing a designated course with us within the last year will receive a 10% discount on fees. Students taking a new course after a one year break in study will receive a 5% discount. Fees are normally payable in advance and subject to increase each year.
Part-time Students

Part-time students will only be charged fees for the volume of study in any one academic year. Modules are priced at £300 to £400 a module, and once you’ve decided how many to take in a year you’ll only be asked to pay for these.

Financial help is available from your Local Education Authority (LEA) or the university, including a non-repayable grant for fees to help with course costs. There is also a non-repayable course grant to help met the cost of books, travel and course expenditure. Both are available to students from lower income households who are studying the equivalent of at least 50% or a full-time course. You need to apply to your LEA and application forms can be downloaded from www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport/formsandguides.
General Information

Professional courses are not eligible for LEA funding, nor are most postgraduate courses except PGCEs. If you’re eligible, the LEA will calculate the amount you will need to contribute towards fees.
Other Charges

Some courses incur additional costs for materials, special facilities or field trips. Details can be found in scheme handbooks, course guides or information leaflets available during registration. Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme

If you have credit for prior learning, you may be quoted a reduction in fees. It’s important you have written confirmation of these before you register, so we can calculate the correct amount you need to pay.
Liability and debt

Even if you are sponsored, you’re responsible for any outstanding fees or amounts at all times. No student with an outstanding debt can go to the next stage of study, receive an award, be considered for further qualifications, or be given a reference from the university.
Changes in circumstances

If you wish to break your programme of study, you’ll need to inform your course leader and Academic Registry (Student Records), so we can try and arrange to maintain your student status.

The Animation and Interactive Media course covers a wide range of creative principles from computer games, design for TV, web design, motion graphics, 2D and 3D animation and DVD production.

The course has been developed with the support of established new media designers and creative industry professionals. They provide work placements, study visits to their companies and live project briefs. Dedicated real environment studio experience will enhance your career prospects as a professional designer.

If you’re interested in joining a creative industry that’s constantly changing and developing, Animation and Interactive Media will give you a firm foundation. The Animation and Interactive Media course is taught using a range of methods. All programmes have a high practical content, with workshop-based modules, group discussion, live briefs from design firms and negotiated independent projects. There are also team-based projects and presentations, together with lectures, seminars and on-line support.

Students have their own well-equipped design studio with its own Mac, Linux servers with industry standard software, digital and analogue animation equipment, printers, scanners, DVD camcorders, and digital cameras. In addition, the faculty’s Learning Centre has PC and Mac computer facilities which are available 7 days a week. You’ll also have access to other studios i.e. TV, photography, sound and video, when working on collaborative projects.
