The contemporary practice of painting encompasses a diverse set of possibilities, ranging from the traditional to the abstract and non-objective. The painting faculty supports a community of learners who experience painting as an exciting expressive medium and who pursue technical and conceptual mastery in the discipline. We nurture your individual voice.

Students majoring in painting are taught by professional artists who maintain an active studio practice, significant depth of engagement, and a passion for the visual arts. Upon graduation, successful students are prepared to begin their careers as exhibiting artists or continue their education in graduate school.

Illustration is the melting pot of the visual arts. In the last 20 years, the lines between illustration, graphic design, and fine art have blurred significantly. New media, expanded applications, and a more sophisticated popular culture make this a very exciting field.

Students majoring in illustration at AAC have many opportunities to incorporate design, digital media, painting, print media, drawing, 3-D arts, and/ or photography, creating a body of work that reflects their personal vision. AAC’s program requires a rigorous studio thesis and professional-practice experience both inside and outside the classroom. Students who graduate with a major in illustration can compete for work in such industries as book and magazine publishing, video games, packaging, corporate branding, retail merchandising, motion graphics, advertising, social advocacy, and entertainment.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Program (B.F.A.)
Students wanting to apply for the B.F.A. degree may do so after completing a minimum of 27 credit hours in Visual Arts and New Media courses. In order to apply for B.F.A. degree status, applicants must have attained at least a 3.0 average in all Visual Art and New Media courses, including Art History, with a 2.0 required for courses taken outside the department to qualify for review. Students native to Fredonia must apply for B.F.A. status before completing six semesters of Fredonia course work; transfer students must apply before completing four semesters of Fredonia course work. In areas heavily impacted by enrollment, only a limited number of students may be admitted to the B.F.A. program. Students with a 3.25 or higher GPA in all Visual Art and New Media courses and 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA and a score of 3.5 or greater during the 24-Hour Review may gain advanced acceptance to B.F.A. without committee review. Students waived out of the review requirement must still receive major area approval and complete a Change of Major form for admittance to the B.F.A. program. All B.F.A. students are required to participate in Senior Exhibition.

The fee for students wishing to enter the Master’s Degrees or Postgraduate Diplomas programmes is given by semester below. The fee for students wishing to take a Semester course or a four-week summer study courses is also given below.

Fees include tuition, seminars, one-to-one tutorials, IT support. The fee does not include travel and lodging for study visits abroad as part of the programme.

Scholarships, Financial Aid and Bursaries are available for all Postgraduate Programmes. Financial Aid applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Travel Costs

Our Master’s Degrees or Postgraduate Diplomas require travel that may include visits to galleries, special collections, art fairs and art-related events including destinations abroad. Travel costs are borne by the student and vary from programme to programme. So that the Institute can buy tickets and make reservations in advance, travel costs for each academic programme are calculated and charged for the full academic year during registration for the first semester starting in September. If currency fluctuations or other changes result in the actual cost of travel exceeding the fee collected, the institute will absorb the additional expense. If the cost of travel is less than the fee collected, the difference will be refunded at the end of the academic year.

The Visual Arts and New Media minor can easily be organized to complement any major. The minor may take a variety of visual and media arts courses or the courses may be in a specific area of study. However, due to enrollment demands, a minor may find it difficult to register for some studios, so flexibility is important. ART 460 Senior Seminar 1

Develop unique skills, insights, and career options in the dynamic field of professional photography. Our Associate of Arts in Photography program lets you explore commercial, fine art, and documentary photography. Specialty courses, hands-on experience, internships, and interaction with nationally and internationally known guest lecturers develop your aesthetic awareness and judgment while expanding your perspective on the visual arts. Master advanced technical skills as faculty members concentrate on furthering your growth, emphasizing a strong portfolio, marketing skills, career and educational opportunities, and assistance with job placement and more. Many students elect to continue their studies at the baccalaureate level, majoring in photography or related fields such as art, media, communications, or journalism.

Educational Objectives

The Department of Art and Art History provides facilities and instruction to serve equally the needs of the general student for participation in and appreciation of the visual arts and those of students with specialized interests and abilities preparing for careers in the production, teaching, utilization, and interpretation of Art and Art History.
Degree Programs

The Department of Art and Art History offers two degrees: the Bachelor of Arts with tracks in Art History, General Study and Studio Art and the Bachelor of Fine Arts with specializations in Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography/Digital Imaging, Graphic Design/Multimedia and Ceramics. The B.A. requires a minimum of 36 credit hours in the department with a grade of C or higher. The B. A. major is also required to have a minor outside the department. Minor requirements are specified by each department and are listed in the Bulletin. The B.F.A. requires a minimum of 72 credit hours in the department, a grade of C or higher in each course, a successful portfolio review, and at least a 3.0 average in departmental courses. The B.F.A. major is not required to have a minor outside the department.

AZTEC is an establish research consortium comprising two research centres and three research groups. The consortium also includes the HEIF funded Centre of Excellence i-DAT in the Faculty of Technology

Critical Spaces aims to enable dialogue across boundaries of research fields and methodologies in contributing to critical understandings of culture and society.

Institute of Digital Art and Technology (i-DAT) aims to define and establish new fields of practice through the creative and innovative use of interactive media, telematic systems and the cognitive and biological sciences.

In Land/Water and the Visual Arts members question, reconsider and renew the nature and use of visual language, in relation to preconceptions of regionalism and landscape art.

All Visual Art and New Media students must maintain a 2.0 average in the Visual Arts and New Media Foundation Program. B.A. students must maintain a 2.0 in all Visual Arts and New Media courses to remain in the program, B.F.A. students must maintain a 2.0 in all Visual Arts and New Media courses and a 3.0 in all major courses to remain in their B.F.A. major. Students may repeat courses to improve their class standing. All Visual Arts and New Media students (B.A. and B.F.A.) must submit an exit portfolio documenting their senior work and complete a senior assessment report to remain on file in the department. B.F.A. students will submit the required material during ART 460: Senior Seminar. B.A. students are required to submit this material to their advisors prior to graduation approval. The material must be in their file to receive final approval to apply for their degree.

In their final semester at Fredonia, all B.F.A. students are required to enroll in ART 460: Senior Seminar to present an exhibition of their work. B.A. students are also encouraged to enroll in the course to exhibit their work, but participating is not a graduation requirement. Most B.F.A. students will exhibit their work in the Senior Exhibition held in the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center Gallery, although some students may choose to exhibit in another venue for course credit.
