Tuition Fees Art Degrees at University College For The Creative Arts

IMPORTANT NOTICE – ELQs (Equivalent Level Qualifications)

Please note the following if you are intending to study for an equivalent or lower level qualification: In early September 2007, John Denham, the Secretary of State for the Department of Universities, Innovation and Skills (DIUS) directed the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to withdraw institutional funding for those studying for an equal or lower level qualification (ELQ).

This means that the university you attend will no longer get any subsidy for your fees because the government is going to stop paying for ELQs. At the moment, if you are from the UK or the EU, you pay much lower fees for university courses than someone from ‘overseas’. This is largely because the government, through block grants to universities, pays the difference.

Therefore, if you do already have the equivalent level qualification and are offered and accept a place you will be liable for full cost fees, as yet to be determined, but similar in level to overseas fees.

For further information on ELQs please see the HEFCE website

Note for Overseas Fees

International students from outside the EU pay tuition fees that cover the full cost of their course in the UK. You will be classified as an ‘overseas student’ if:
you have not been ordinarily resident in the UK/EU for the three years immediately prior to the beginning of the course;
for any part of the three years you have been resident in the UK/EU wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education;
you are not ‘settled’ in the UK/EU at a specified date before the start of your course (you are settled if you are ordinarily resident in the UK/EU and have no restrictions on the period that you may remain in the UK/EU)

Student quotes

“What I appreciate most is the energy and depth in the critical debate which takes place in and around lectures, tutorials and the darkrooms.”

“I looked at courses at several universities but was told that if I was serious about studying documentary photography I had to come to Newport. From the moment I came through the gates and from the warm reception I was given I knew this was the place I had to come to study. I felt at home here – the landscape really reminds me of New Zealand.”
