BA Hons Contemporary Photographic Practice at University of Northumbria at Newcastle United Kingdom

COURSE INFORMATION

The Contemporary Photographic Practice programme has been designed to provide students with an understanding of the techniques, theories, research and contemporary usage of photography, within a wide social and cultural context. Early emphasis is placed on methods and materials. At this time students are introduced to the basics of photographic history; how to read photographs; and formative critical theories related to photography. Building on this groundwork the programme then introduces students to key contemporary and post-modern debates relating to the extended range of practices open to a contemporary photographer. However, as the subject itself is continually open to change and re-definition students have an important role in defining and exploring new directions in photographic practice. With this in mind, the Contemporary Photographic Practice degree helps students to develop the range of key skills necessary to be a photographer today and to be able to fully exploit the potential of lens-based practice.

Students are encouraged to identify the subject matter of their photography projects, and in the final year present an exhibition of work made as part of self-initiated (visual) research, and a portfolio for their degree assessment. Previously, students have been supported in a wide range of projects ranging from new approaches to documentary production, desktop publishing, web-based work, digital, video and installation.

The programme is taught by a staff of practising photographers, subject specialists and visiting artists, providing an atmosphere of involved study, research into teaching, theory to practice and importantly, lively debate.

COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT

Teaching is through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials with lectures and seminars covering photographic history, theory and contemporary photographic practices. Student project work is developed in workshops and through tutorials.

Students are assessed on a combination of project work, essays, seminars and private study. Assessment of Years 2 and 3 contributes to the final degree award. In the third year, all students submit a dissertation and work towards an exhibition of their final project.

SELECTION
Applications are encouraged from potential students who can offer equivalent or alternative qualifications and also from mature students where the usual requirements may be waived.

CAREERS
The programme teaches key professional skills that will prepare students for a successful career in photography. Students completing the programme are articulate and well informed about a wide range of contemporary issues.

Employment is a key issue and the programme recognises that graduates working in photography will need to be flexible, imaginative, creative and possess a sound technical knowledge. Final year students are helped to gain a formative knowledge of possible career paths, and opportunities through a professional practice module that introduces them to a range of practitioners in both the photographic arts and commercial photography. Recent graduates have stayed on with us, to undertake postgraduate study, whilst others have taken up a variety of artistic and media related careers, including artist, editorial photographer, picture editor, curator, teacher and gallery assistant.

Financial aid Photography at College of Visual Arts Minnesota

FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Most types of financial aid are awarded based on need. Need is essentially the difference between the cost of education and the amount a family is expected to contribute toward those costs. A family’s expected contribution is determined by a standard federal formula.

To be eligible for financial aid, a CVA student must:

Be enrolled at CVA in a degree program.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Be registered with Selective Service (if you are a male).
Not be in default on any educational loan or owe a refund on any federal or state grant, and maintain satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.
Some types of financial aid may require full time enrollment. Financial aid is prorated for part-time students according to their course load. Financial aid for second degree seeking students is limited to the CVA Grant and student loans.

A student has to reapply annually for all types of financial aid. In January, new financial aid forms and applications are distributed for the next fall term. Returning students who wish to apply for aid should complete their financial aid application by April 1 for priority consideration.

APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID

STEP 1
Complete the CVA Application for Financial Aid.

STEP 2

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. CVA’s school code is 007462. If you don’t want to submit your FAFSA online, you may request a FAFSA booklet from the Financial Aid Office. Once your form is completed, please submit your form to the Financial Aid Office for processing.

If you already completed the FAFSA and didn’t include CVA as one of your college choices, call (800) 433-3243 or go on-line to www.fafsa.ed.gov to have a copy of your SAR sent to the CVA Financial Aid Office.

Your FAFSA may be selected for a process called verification. One out of every three applicants is selected for this process. If your application is selected, the CVA Financial Aid Office will contact you requesting various documents. Please note that your financial aid file will be placed in “hold” status until all the required information is received by the Financial Aid Office.

NOTE: It is recommended that you submit the FAFSA after you and/or parents, if applicable, have completed the current federal income tax forms (1040). If the tax forms are not complete, you may estimate the financial portion of the application.

STEP 3
To apply for the Federal Stafford Loan, you must complete student loan entrance counseling and complete the Federal Stafford Master Promissory Note (MPN). Both steps below can be completed at the CVA web site. You will be required to select a lender for your Stafford Loan application.
Complete the MPN online at the CVA Stafford Loan Guide Page. The MPN is a continuous promissory note that needs to be submitted only once.
Complete Stafford Loan entrance counseling online at the CVA Online Student Loan Counseling Page. Please note, some lenders may include entrance counseling as part of the MPN process.
Please print a copy of both the MPN and the Entrance Interview Confirmation for your records. If you prefer not to complete this process online, please contact the CVA Office of Financial Aid for more information on completing the paper application.

Financial Aid Photography at Amarillo College

Financial aid is a means of reducing a student’s educational costs. Such costs include direct expenses, such as tuition, fees, books and supplies, and indirect expenses, such as room and board, transportation and personal expenses. Aid is available to students through state, federal and local governments; through many private sources, such as industrial, service, civic and fraternal groups; and directly through colleges and universities.

Awards at Amarillo College are made on the basis of financial need, academic progress, achievement or other qualifications required by the donors of the funds. The financial need of a student is the difference between reasonable expenses during an academic year and the amount which the student/family can be expected to contribute toward these expenses. This is called the “Expected Family Contribution.”

Students must be enrolled at least half-time at Amarillo College to be eligible for most financial aid. Federal Pell grants can be paid to less- than-half-time students. For financial aid purposes, less than half-time means that a student must be enrolled in 1-5 credit hours; half-time, 6-8 credit hours; three-quarter time, 9-11 credit hours; and full-time, 12 credit hours or more.

The U.S. Department of Education frequently changes regulations pertaining to financial aid. Amarillo College attempts to comply with all legislative mandates and Federal regulations. The Financial Aid Office reserves the right to make policy and procedure changes during the award year.

Students who are in default on a Guaranteed Student Loan from any institution may enroll for classes at Amarillo College but will not be able to receive an official academic transcript or any financial aid as long as any Guaranteed Student Loan is in default.

Fees for international (non-EU) students are different. For details of our international tuition fees, click here.

Work placements are around £1,000 a year. We’ll use some of the additional income received from tuition fees to improve student support and facilities.
Student Loans for Fees

Eligible students won’t have to pay fees before studying. You’ll repay them after you have left university and earning more than £15,000 a year. The government will write off all student loan balances left unpaid 25 years after they have left their course. There is an age restriction on eligibility, currently 50 at the start of the course.
Postgraduate Student Fees

Postgraduate taught and research fees set out are the price of each stage of the awards, and guaranteed for that stage only, provided there is no break in study.

Students starting a new full-time course after successfully completing a designated course with us within the last year will receive a 10% discount on fees. Students taking a new course after a one year break in study will receive a 5% discount. Fees are normally payable in advance and subject to increase each year.
Part-time Students

Part-time students will only be charged fees for the volume of study in any one academic year. Modules are priced at £300 to £400 a module, and once you’ve decided how many to take in a year you’ll only be asked to pay for these.

Financial help is available from your Local Education Authority (LEA) or the university, including a non-repayable grant for fees to help with course costs. There is also a non-repayable course grant to help met the cost of books, travel and course expenditure. Both are available to students from lower income households who are studying the equivalent of at least 50% or a full-time course. You need to apply to your LEA and application forms can be downloaded from www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport/formsandguides.
General Information

Professional courses are not eligible for LEA funding, nor are most postgraduate courses except PGCEs. If you’re eligible, the LEA will calculate the amount you will need to contribute towards fees.
Other Charges

Some courses incur additional costs for materials, special facilities or field trips. Details can be found in scheme handbooks, course guides or information leaflets available during registration. Students taking modules with additional charges will be required to pay for them. To find out how much our courses are, visit our courses pages.
Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme

If you have credit for prior learning, you may be quoted a reduction in fees. It’s important you have written confirmation of these before you register, so we can calculate the correct amount you need to pay.
Liability and debt

Even if you are sponsored, you’re responsible for any outstanding fees or amounts at all times. No student with an outstanding debt can go to the next stage of study, receive an award, be considered for further qualifications, or be given a reference from the university.
Changes in circumstances

If you wish to break your programme of study, you’ll need to inform your course leader and Academic Registry (Student Records), so we can try and arrange to maintain your student status.
