The Photography program’s wide breadth of traditional and cutting-edge processes is unique to the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Students learn about 35mm, digital, medium-and large-format cameras, black and white printing, digital output, color shooting, experimental photography and digital video. They have the opportunity (also unique to AAC) to link photographic theory and practice to other artistic disciplines.

The major provides a blend of theoretical and real-world instruction that enables students to build careers as commercial photographers, professional artists, photojournalists, and in other disciplines. Many graduates move on to grad school or pursue careers in the gallery or museum world.

PAINTING
Students who choose painting as their concentration begin by strengthening their powers of observation while exploring the many ways which painting can capture perception. Materials and methods are explored as relationships between form and content are developed. Students become familiar with the theory and practice of painting through extensive studio exploration, visiting artists, readings on contemporary issues and working with experienced faculty, who are accomplished within their fields. Students are exposed to contemporary issues in painting, and explore the relationship between painting and drawing and other media such as video and photography.

The advanced drawing/painting students are challenged to create bodies of work for exhibition in the community and will learn about the broad range of professional opportunities to pursue—from maintaining a studio practice, working in set design, creating public murals, working on commissions, illustrating, teaching, and preparing to exhibit and sell their work.

The desire to create is central to human nature. And giving shape to one’s thoughts and dreams is a pursuit worthy of the highest efforts.

In keeping with Whitworth’s mission, the art department strives to develop in its students an awareness and appreciation of God’s world. Professionally active faculty members whose works have won awards at exhibits and juried competitions throughout the nation encourage students to participate in art to enhance their life experiences, to develop skills and concepts through theory and practice, and to immerse themselves intellectually and spiritually.

Concordia’s Cinema programs are distinguished from many others by the fact that they are housed in the Faculty of Fine Arts and thus, approach their subject matter primarily as a means of artistic expression. Consequently, a central aim of these programs is to prepare students to become filmmakers, film animators or film historians/critics who have a two-fold awareness: the artistic and cultural potential of the medium, and its history and traditions.

Cinema programs are oriented towards art and culture rather than industry and commerce. However, it should be noted that students are educated in the technical aspects of filmmaking as well as in financial and commercial factors. The programs attempt to strike a balance between the practical and the purely creative aspects of cinema, just as they seek to achieve a balance between social and aesthetic concerns.
Curriculum

Major in Film Animation — 60 credits
Minor in Film Animation — 30 credits

Designed to teach the full process of film animation including theory and practice, the program offers a thorough grounding in the art and technique of frame-by-frame filmmaking. Students are encouraged to develop their own creative potential and to select, from an ever widening range of animation methods, the style most suitable for their own personal expression. Students are also encouraged to complete studio art electives in order to develop their abilities in the areas of design, drawing and colouring.
