BA Hons Photography Tuition and Fees at Southampton Solent University

Tuition fees 2009/10 year will be:

UK and EU students:
£3,225 for a full-time undergraduate degree – some courses are less – this is shown on individual course details
HND’s are £2050
foundation years are £1795

To help you cover the cost you can take out a ‘fee loan’ to pay your fees which are paid directly to the university by the Student Loan company. Some students can get a maintenance loan (student loan) to help with their living costs (up to £4,625 max).

You only repay both loans when you finish your course and are earning £15,000 or more.

If you don’t have an income this high you may be able to defer your repayments until you can afford them.

The University is strongly committed to making its Degree, Foundation Degree and HND programmes accessible to all who will benefit from them.

Students enter our courses through a variety of educational routes. Applicants without GCE A levels, a GNVQ, other recognised equivalent qualification or appropriate Access to Higher Education qualifications will be considered for admission on the basis of other qualifications and experiential learning.

Course structure

This course offers transferable and convergent skills for working in diverse environments with the image. 70% of coursework is studio based and 30% theory based.
Course content

Year 1

Units cover studio, digital and darkroom practices, as well as the history and theory of photography to help contextualise and inform the development of your work. There is an opportunuty to visit Paris in the first semester.

Year 2

Option and core units provide the opportunity to investigate more specific areas of practice, explore new directions and develop practical skills. There is an opportunity to visit New York in the second semester.

Year 3

Two extended practice units and an extended essay allow you to define your practice. Your final year culminates in a Degree Show presentation, public exhibition and publication.

BA Hons Photography at Southampton Solent University

This course equips you with strong practical skills whilst also providing the critical framework needed for a career in photography and the media.

Historical and critical studies will inform the development of your individual practice, and you will be guided through concepts relating to the production, philosophy and critical position of the image within contemporary visual culture.

Visiting speakers from industry and the arts offer an insight into their practice and help you to develop your awareness of professional environments and contexts.

Visits to cultural centres such as Paris and New York are offered during the course.
