Finding and capturing memorable images requires a diverse array of attributes. Problems must be solved quickly and creatively, while maintaining focus and vision. The Professional Photography Program at Brooks Institute is designed to teach students the skills and talents required for a rewarding professional photographic career.

From day one hands-on instruction and practice provide the technical expertise which forms the foundation of future work. Through concentrated experience in the studio, students can learn how to manipulate and control lighting and exposures, compose people and still life compositions and produce images on a variety of film and digital formats.

Brooks offers a variety of professional photography degree program areas including a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Photography and a Masters of Fine Arts in Photography.

Graduates of the Professional Photography program will emerge after two years of coursework with solid technical and aesthetic photography skills. In addition, they will gain a strong foundation in business and marketing practices essential to survival as an independent operator. Current market demand offers our graduates entry-level positions in general commercial, advertising, industrial, editorial, and free-lance photography. Employment will also be found as technicians in professional processing labs, electronic imaging and multimedia service bureaus.

Success in the competitive field of professional photography not only requires mastery of the craft but also an aptitude for pre-visualizing, problem-solving, teamwork and communication. For this reason, the curriculum ranges from foundations in camera operation, digital editing, and professional practices. Second-year students have two terms of a photo business practicum that simulates business environments by servicing the colleges internal photographic needs. Students also have in-depth courses in design and web page construction. Finally, students gain experience in the field as interns with the professional photographers from the Portland metropolitan area.

Program Outcomes

At the completion of this program, the student should be able to:
apply tools, techniques and processes to effectively communicate their ideas and to initiate, define and solve challenging photographic problems
defend individual work and perspectives in relation to other work and to create multiple solutions to visual problems
operate successfully within an owner-operator business environment
identify connections between photography and other disciplines and creative media

Prospective students must satisfactorily meet admission program criteria and the application deadline to be considered for admission. Alternates may be considered for mid-year entry if space is available. PROCEDURES:

Fill out and return the standard MHCC Student Admissions Form.

Return with your application form of a Photo CD or a transparent plastic slide sleeve of 12 slides representing your visual expression and a short statement of your goals as they relate to the professional photography program. Judging is based more on how you address the world visually through your photography and art than technical quality. Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped slide mailer or envelop to return your work.

You will need to make arrangements to take the College Placement Test (CPT) through Advising and Counseling Center (491-7644) or through the community college nearest you. You will need scores that would enable enrollment in Math 20, Reading 90, and Writing 115. If you have had previous college work demonstrating your math, writing and reading skills, please have your official transcript(s) sent to the Admissions and Records Office.

Your application will be considered complete after you have completed Steps 1-3. A selection committee comprised of program advisors and college personnel will review only those complete applications.

Upon notice of acceptance into the program by the Admissions and Records Office, the applicant must indicate his/her intention to enroll by completing registration by September. The Office of Admissions and Records has the sole authorization to inform students of their admissions status: accepted, accepted as alternates, and not accepted. You may expect a letter on your admissions status before June.

If you are accepted into the program, you will need to complete–if you haven’t already done so–ART 261 (Photography I) before the beginning of fall term. Several sections are offered during the summer term. Your acceptance into the program is not at all based on whether you have taken the Art 261 before you submit your application.

In our photo program, you’ll learn how to transfer your personal photographic vision to film or digital data. This requires knowledge of scientific processes films, chemistry, optics, color theory, lighting ratios and computer processing.

The CMC Professional Photography degree program is strengthened by alumni who return to share their expertise with students. Nearby communities offer other opportunities to learn. There are exhibitions in Aspen, workshops and guest lectures at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, and an active group of local photographers.
