Photographing People Degree at Australian Correspondence Schools

Course Code BPH102
Fee Code S2
Number of Assignments 10
Duration (approx) 100 hours

When we think of photographing people, we automatically think of taking a portrait, but not all people photography is portraiture.

A portrait is (according to one dictionary definition) a painting, drawing or photograph of a person, often only the face or a description. A photographic portrait focuses on the person and attempts to convey an image of what or who the person is, whether physically, or perhaps spiritually or emotionally. There is also the group portrait, usually an image of a small number of people (siuch as a team or family portrait).

However, people can also be photographed in other ways, where the focus might not be the individuals being photographed, but the social or cultural context (fashion, news events, sporting events etc.) or their relationship to the scene in which they are placed.

This course is designed for persons who already have some experience with photography to help them develop their ability to take better photographs of people.

THE OVERVIEW:
Light. Chemistry. Observation.
Behold the beholder. You see emotion, intrigue, brilliance and energy in everyday surroundings and moments, and you capture them and their meaning for others. Photography, too, is a pencil for the artist, revealing pattern and form, detail and composition. Photography allows the artist to both observe and comment on life with an extremely powerful tool.

Examples of Photography student work

There is equal emphasis in MIAD’s Photography Program between the technical and the conceptual. You will explore digital imaging and the darkroom, learn how images can be manipulated and how photographers are able to extend their vision to wider expanses of expression. As you advance in the program, you will have the flexibility to construct your major with emphases in areas of personal interest, such as alternative print processes, expanded scale, large format camera, commercial applications and color.

As a senior, you will intern in preparation for your entry into a professional career. MIAD’s Photography graduates find success in many careers: some work as fine artists, while others choose to work commercially in advertising, portraiture, photojournalism or industrial photography.

Traditional Photography at Birmingham Southern College

This course offers the opportunity to explore and become proficient in the skills of Traditional Photography. You will have the opportunity to learn use of the camera, studio photography, portraiture, urban landscapes, film processing and photographic printing. During the course there will be an option to look at some elements of digital photography. The course is suitable for both novices and students with more subject experience.
Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements but you should be motivated and demonstrate an interest in the subject you wish to pursue. Whilst largely for adults of all ages with some experience, there are a few opportunities for beginners.
How is my work assessed?

These classes focus on the joy of creative practice in the visual arts and there is no formal assessment. You will be guided by your tutor in continuously evaluating what you create as a natural part of development through learning.
Can I study further?

Whilst these classes are not intended as preparatory, they may help you progress to one of our undergraduate programmes.
What are my employability prospects?

Again, these classes are intended as learning experiences in their own right but they may enhance your employability by developing new or existing skills
