The Portraiture major is designed to prepare students for jobs in the largest employment field in photography. Portrait photographers can have successful careers in communities of almost any size, and skills in this field can also be applied to other areas of professional photography. The Brooks curriculum reflects how dynamic the portrait industry has become, providing instruction in traditional, documentary, and fine art approaches, using film-based and digital workflow processes. The curriculum emphasizes a realistic awareness of today’s professional market, and it is designed to develop the technical and artistic competence to consistently make saleable photographs of people, whether for personal or business use.

Associate in Science
Major Code – PHTC.AAS

Prepares students for positions in the photographic profession. Students satisfactorily completing this program will have the necessary skills and knowledge to qualify for entrance positions as darkroom technicians, commercial photographers, portrait photographers, photojournalists and general photographic technicians.

Students must provide for their own use the following equipment: digital camera (of design approved by instructor), light meter, flash unit and tripod.

Career Opportunities:
The field of photography offers a variety of commercial, educational, informational, scientific, technical, and fine art opportunities to the skilled individual who is interested in communicating ideas and concepts visually. Photographers find careers with newspapers, magazines, photo agencies, industrial companies, and medical facilities. Most commercial and portrait photographers are independent entrepreneurs. Many graduates find employment as sales representatives for photo-related corporations, while others work as sales representatives for other photographers. The rapid development and assimilation of electronic media has opened the door to a variety of additional career opportunities, such as creating or preparing an image for reproduction through computer technology.
