Financial aid Photography at California Institute Of The Arts

The mission of the Financial Aid Office at CalArts is to help students in meeting their costs of attendance at the institute. CalArts is committed to offering a wide range of financial assistance to its students. While the primary responsibility for meeting college costs rests with the student and the student’s family, many families have limited resources and are unable to meet the high cost of college without financial assistance. Therefore, all applicants to CalArts are encouraged to apply for financial aid. (Applying for admission and applying for financial aid are two separate processes.) International students are not eligible for federal and state assistance.

For the most part, funds made available through the Financial Aid Office are awarded on a combination of demonstrated need and artistic merit. Need is determined by completing and submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid/Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid). CalArts also offers a few merit-only awards, however, to be eligible for these awards, you must have completed your financial aid file.

Read through this information and review the sample budgets. Know approximately what your costs will be for an academic year and draw up your own personal budget. With some early planning on your part and some assistance from our office, we know your academic year at CalArts will not only be financially possible, but a pleasant experience as well.

Tuition and fees Photography at California Institute Of The Arts

Application fee

A non-refundable fee is required for each application submitted, made payable to CalArts. The fee schedule is as follows:

Applications meeting the Regular Deadline of January 5, 2009:

$70 for each domestic application / $85 for each international application

While the Janurary 5, 2009 deadline has passed, we are still accepting applications for Fall 2009.

Students applying online may submit their fee with a credit card or send a check or money order after submission. Those students applying with our downloadable application must submit a check or money order with their application. Applications received without payment will not be processed. Fee waiver requests must be submitted in writing, and should accompany the paper application, or be sent after applying online. CalArts will accept the standard College Board fee waiver, or a letter from a high school/transfer counselor who can verify family financial hardship. Fee waivers are generally not granted for MFA or International students.

Program in Photography and Media at California Institute Of The Arts

Submit approximately 20 examples of your most recent work, or a presentation of your practice that is complete and cohesive, and represents what you believe to be your best work. The works you submit need not be purely photographic; we are interested in a variety of media practices and integrations. Edit and sequence works carefully. You may send more than one body of work and more than one media type (video, slides, texts, web sites, CD-ROMs, DVDs). However, we recommend that you emphasize two or three bodies of work clearly rather than sending a sample of many different projects.

BFA applicants

Submit examples of personally directed work, not class assignments. We want to know what your interests are and how you represent them in your practice. Photographic works can be originally shot in any format (film, 35mm, medium/large format, digital, Polaroid, pinhole, etc.).

MFA applicants

Applicants who have passed the preliminary selection process will be notified by mail in mid-February. At that time, candidates will be invited to visit CalArts in March for an interview and to meet faculty and students. The interview is a full-day event and an important component of the final selection process.
