The AAS in Digital Photography degree program is a five-semester commercial digital photography program using film and digital techniques for photographic reproduction of the image. It is designed to prepare students with understanding of the fundamentals of photography, imaging and studio practices, as well as to provide a strong balance of business and technical skills.

The B.F.A. program in Photography is designed to prepare students to succeed in the competitive world of professional photography while at the same time maintaining the standards and the aims of a NCA education. The NCA Photography program has an applied emphasis designed to prepare B.F.A. graduates to enter one of several professional fields of photography, including but not limited to advertising, illustration, editorial, portrait, journalistic or a fine art sub-discipline.

Graduates of the program develop photographic skills with fine art aesthetics, visual problem solving, and traditional and digital imaging photographic media as evidenced in their personal portfolios. Students also develop an understanding of both historic and contemporary photographic trends and masters. Collectively these attributes are gained through classroom instruction, work production, exposure to working professionals, and internships.

Students in the Photography program develop quality photographic projects with the final goal of a presentation portfolio.

This program provides an experimental learning environment that allows students the opportunity to stay abreast of technological, aesthetic, business and societal changes while integrating personal, professional and social responsibility.

The Master of Fine Arts in Photography degree program is designed to be completed in two years; however, a student may take up to three years to complete the program. Upon graduation, students should be able to:
Create and exhibit a coherent body of photography / imaging art
Utilize a multitude of electronic and traditional resources to develop and execute effective research strategies
Describe the business, research and academic practices of the photographic field

Students learn about 35mm, digital, medium-and large-format cameras, black and white printing, digital output, color shooting, experimental photography and digital video. They have the opportunity (also unique to AAC) to link photographic theory and practice to other artistic disciplines.

The major provides a blend of theoretical and real-world instruction that enables students to build careers as commercial photographers, professional artists, photojournalists, and in other disciplines. Many graduates move on to grad school or pursue careers in the gallery or museum world.

The Photography Program takes a broad-based approach, engaging students in the most contemporary practices, as well as in the traditions and historical structures from which those practices have evolved.

The curriculum provides a technical foundation in analog and digital imaging alike and introduces the critical skills and theoretical insights necessary for students to manifest their creative visions. Our faculty—all professional artists—represents a diverse range of styles and approaches to the medium. Students graduate with the skills necessary to pursue careers as exhibiting artists and to work in most photography-related professions.

The program’s facilities enable work in black-and-white, color, and alternative processes on large and small scales alike. The facilities on the Oakland campus are staffed more than 90 hours a week and include two large black-and-white darkrooms, 12 individual darkrooms for color printing, a 42-inch RA 4 color processor, Photography Program–specific high-end digital workstations, a black-and-white- and color-compatible mural darkroom, an alternative-processes lab, a dedicated lighting studio, and much more.

Cameras and equipment are available to advanced students for off-campus use. Other resources include a gallery for student exhibitions, guest lectures by emerging and high-profile photographers alike, and a visiting-artist program.

Students pursue internships with photography studios, museums, galleries, major newspapers and magazines, and film production companies. Many alumni have become professional photographers, and several have been included in such national exhibitions as the Whitney Biennial. Our graduates typically enter top-tier graduate programs.

Every photograph is a comment on contemporary culture. Exploring that comment is a primary focus of MECA’s photography program. Aesthetics, technique, and composition are discussed primarily in context of what the image communicates. The program, of course, isn’t all discussion. Students begin by using film and making black and white prints in a traditional darkroom. Guided by a faculty whose interests range from landscape photography to digital book arts and video, they proceed to courses in digital, color, large-format, lighting, and professional practices. But in all courses, the focus is on the content of individual photographs — and the photographer’s intent.

Continuing a tradition of leadership in photographic education, the program in Photography at Indiana University offers an opportunity for talented and committed individuals to advance their photographic work in an envirnoment of intensive interaction with a select group of peers. The study in Photography balances a central insight and verbal articulation. The program goes about these objectives in a combination of ways. Graduate students are given fully furnished individual darkrooms in the recently remodeled Photography area. The Photography program is supplemented by a series of visiting artists. In the past few years, Jonathan Green, Joel-Peter Witkin, Emmet Gowin, Tony Medoza, Bea Nettles, Jerry Uelsmann, Carrie Mae Weems, Andres Serrano, and Manual among others, have worked with graduate students.

Sheridan’s Applied Photography Program offers a superb education in the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of photography combined with leading-edge technical and practical knowledge and skills. Students learn to meet the demands of major types of commercial photography while developing their imagination and creativity. ADDITIONAL COSTS

Plan to spend approximately $2,000 per year in supplies. Students receive a DSLR camera kit for their exclusive use from September to the end of April each year they are in the program. Program fees also include an external hard drive for file transfers and storage. This hard drive becomes the property of the student. Access to all other equipment is as needed to produce program related assignments. Laptops are provided only for studio and location based image capture. Students are not required to own their own camera or laptop to attend the program.
