The HND course differs in structure from a degree course in its make-up and delivery. It will be centred on a structured series of assignments, which will form the basis of the students studies. In completing these assignments, students are introduced to practical and vocational scenarios which require them to research and put into practice workshop-based guidance and instruction from the assignment tutors, together with their own research. The course is very much practically based, strongly underpinned with academic research and reading, as students learn, research, develop and apply skills and techniques appropriate to contemporary practical scenarios. The course will prepare the student to enter a broad range of photo-related fields from professional practice through to internet and virtual design. This should enable students to progress their career in a direction of their own choosing.
Stage one

The first stage of study is broadly exploratory in nature, offering students guidance and instruction in a wide range of practical situations from studio and location lighting, darkroom techniques in colour and monochrome to digital imaging and design. This learning is underpinned throughout by contextual and historical study that ultimately places the students’ own work within contemporary and historical practice.
Stage two

The second stage offers students further opportunity to produce work that reflects the individual student’s interests and specialist areas. The aim of this stage is that in completing the assignments, the student graduates with a portfolio of work and a range of knowledge that will take them forward, academically and/or professionally, along their chosen career path.

Stage one

Introduction to processes and techniques of photography (from the use of a 35mm camera, digital SLR to medium and large format photography, studio and location shooting and working in both the wet and dark rooms) and the consideration of the different conceptual approaches to photography, supported by theory lectures alongside fine art students.
Stage two

Development of a body of practical work around both fine art and commercial applications, supported by theory lectures on the place of photography within a variety of genres and the production of a folder of career development information.
Stage three

Consolidation of practical work, culminating in an exhibition and either a shorter dissertation and a professional development folder, or a longer dissertation for those with strengths in critical writing.

MA Photography China at MA Photography (China)

Course overview

The MA Photography course focuses on the fields of international photojournalism, documentary and travel photography and is designed in particular for postgraduate students who wish to develop their knowledge and skills to pursue a career in these areas.

You will explore issues of photographic culture, image economies and visual representation and develop an understanding of how the practice of making photographic images is affected by these issues in terms of both your approach to the subject and the style of your photographs. You will apply your learning through a series of practical assignments.

The course is designed to be accessible to professional photographers, photo editors and educators. It runs simultaneously at two teaching centres, one in Bolton, England and the other in Dalian, China. It will be possible for you to switch learning centres at the end of each term or to travel to the other learning centre to use it as a project base during your studies.

Special consideration will be given to candidates who do not have these qualifications but who have significant experience in the field of photography and are able to present a strong portfolio as part of their application.

Moves students away for the traditional darkroom into the alternative realm of digital imaging. Using Adobe Photoshop to manipulate photographs on the Macintosh, students retouch, color-correct, and output images by working with layers, channels, color adjustments, masks, and filters; and capture images by scanning film and using digital camera. A word-and-image project involves collaboration with graphic design students. Note: This class is held in the computer lab.
