Lighting and Camera Capture Skills
Select effective lighting techniques and equipment for portraiture and still life and fine art.
Use point source, flood, spot, diffused and reflected light.
Recognize the signature effects of each type of lighting.
Use metering and exposure calculation, and have a full knowledge of 35mm and medium format cameras.
Master indoor and outdoor ambient lighting, strobe-hand held flash, lighting with constant light sources, day light VS. tungsten chrome, mixed lighting with constant light sources.

About the course
BA (Hons) Photography is a highly respected course offering exciting choices for students who wish to work in specialist areas.

The uses of photography in modern society are diverse, for example, in advertising, art, documentary, editorial, fashion, photo journalism, sport and studio. To reflect this, we offer a choice from the following so that you can gain a degree title reflecting particular areas of practice:

This is a very flexible course, giving breadth of choice and specialisation across the subject area. Tutors are experienced in photography and related disciplines and the course features a visiting lecturer programme with speakers from a wide spectrum of photographic practice.

The course is made up of two core modules: Visual Practice and Critical Practice.

One of the elements for which the School is internationally acclaimed is the annual show; this is a profile of the work of final year students, organised as a photography festival, with students exhibiting work in and around venues in Nottingham. This lively finale gives the public a chance to see what students do and makes an excellent launch pad for graduate careers.

How do you study?
The course recognises that you gain knowledge and understanding from learning through experience. It is delivered in a variety of ways including technical demonstrations, workshops, seminars, presentations and photographic practices.

Special features
The annual degree show is organised as a photo festival, with student work in and around venues in Nottingham. This lively finale gives the public a chance to see what students do and makes an excellent launch pad for graduate careers.

Assessment
Modules are continuously assessed through the presentation of project work and written work. They have clear assessment methods and criteria and formative feedback will help students to progress with their studies.

Assessment in the final year is of the dissertation, final degree show, coursework or portfolio.

Study abroad options
Photography in Europe students spend a minimum of 15 weeks studying overseas (placement officers and course tutors help and advise in this aspect).

Resources and facilities
Newly upgraded facilities include black and white and colour darkrooms, photographic studios, comprehensive Mac editing suites and digital printing. The NTU library contains an extensive collection of photography books.

Students can hire a range of photographic equipment and use traditional and digital. We ask that our students provide their own 35mm camera, black and white processing equipment and most materials. Most students decide to invest in a computer scanner and printer during the course of their studies.

Selection is through UCAS application form and, where invited, interview and portfolio. Potential applicants are encouraged to visit the School during the publicised open days.

Your future career
Photography students have been very successful in winning prizes and awards, and graduates are successfully engaged in a very broad range of photographic practices that includes photo-journalism, illustration, studio, art practices and the creative industries that address the image.

Diploma in Photographic Imaging
Level: 5 – This programme is offered as a series of workshops, each based on a photographic genre or set of technical skills. In each workshop you will work on assignments tailored to your individual interests (where possible). Workshops and areas of study will include photographic design, digital imaging, colour management, colour technology, technical practice, available light (portrait and wedding photography), studio photography, photo journalism, image concepts, creative postproduction, contextual studies, physics, philosophy, new media studies, and professional practice.

Diploma in Professional Photography
Level: 6 – This programme is designed to help you develop specialist photographic skills and knowledge in an applied learning environment. Industry based skills are taught in the context of student elected photographic genres (eg studio/location portraiture, studio still life, photojournalism/documentary, fashion etc). All courses are compulsory and include digital postproduction/prepress, digital imaging, creative lighting, technical practice, interactive design, professional and business practice and a major project. Industry contact through membership in a professional association is also included. The programme puts equal emphasis on the development of technical skill, creativity and the understanding of design processes.
In addition you may choose to first complete the part time Photographic Folio Preparation Course. This course will help you assemble an application portfolio for tertiary photographic study, which best shows your artistic strengths. This course covers camera use, darkroom skills, developing a theme and folio presentation; and is limited to ten students.

Why should I take a CPIT Photography course?

Photography is the skill of using light to give expression to the world around us. Light is vibrant, beautiful, emotional and varied in its qualities. It is also one of the most effective carriers of information there is, and has the power to influence our perceptions.

A CPIT photography diploma will give you the opportunity to develop in-depth working knowledge of this exciting and powerful medium, as well as to develop the skills that you’ll need to succeed in occupations involving photography.

Photographic imaging forms an integral part of media such as 3D modelling and animation, film, video, television and computer graphic design.

CPIT ’s photography tutors have industry experience and work collaboratively with professional members of the School’s Photographic Advisory Board. They are therefore well placed to ensure that the standards required by the professional photography community and allied industries are met.
How much work will it be?

You’ll study full time over a 32-week year, divided into two semesters. This represents about 40 hours work each week, including lectures, tutorials, critiques and time spent undertaking independent learning.

Entry for domestic and international students is competitive, and you will need to prepare a portfolio of work as part of the application process.
Where will I study?

As a photography student, you’ll have access to industry standard software and hardware for complete in-house image production to professional standards. The studios are equipped with Bowens and Hensel lighting, and a range of medium format and 4 x 5 format cameras.

Extensive Mac-based computer labs allow for full post-production capabilities. A number of Nikon digital SLR cameras and lenses are also available for you where required.

Additionally, battery powered portable flashlights allow you to extend your creativity in field based photography. However, you must supply your own manually adjustable 35 mm film camera and lenses

The Professional Photo-Imaging Program at Langara College trains students in both traditional and digital imaging. Many applications of photography are explored including advertising, architectural, editorial, industrial, photo-journalism, portraiture and scientific. Students develop strong camera techniques and lighting abilities and become adept at lab work, image manipulation and quality control. Graduates are awarded a diploma in Professional Photo-Imaging.

This full-time, two-year program offers a well-rounded educational experience that currently results in a diploma in Professional Photo-Imaging. The curriculum provides solid technical training combined with the business and aesthetic aspects of photography and digital imaging. Students are fully educated in the demanding requirements of the photo-imaging industry.

This year’s Photo-Imaging grads were featured at the Moat Gallery at the Vancouver Public Library for Artsfest 2008
