Montserrat’s Art History Minor provides an opportunity for students with a keen interest in art history to further develop their knowledge of the history and context of the visual arts. Students go beyond the survey, conducting in-depth study of different periods and places, and analyzing theory and criticism. A minor in art history is especially advantageous for graduates who wish to pursue careers as educators, curators, critics and arts administrators, or as preparation for graduate programs in art history, art education, design, and studio art.

Whether an artist chooses to work with traditional materials — such as plaster, clay, stone, metal, or wood — or more contemporary materials like found objects, electronic media, or one’s own body — the ability to communicate ideas and impulses requires sensitivity and skill.

Creating a successful sculpture involves a series of related decisions — literally layered one on top of another — that involve issues of craft, spatial orchestration, scale relationships, material interactions and tolerances, the eventual site of a work, and even the audience it invites. Ultimately, some intangible idea has been given form, and some previously dormant material has been given voice.

Sculpture, as it is practiced today, is a broadly defined medium. Montserrat’s sculpture faculty embrace a variety of attitudes and areas of expertise, and our courses provide a range of conceptual and technical information. Montserrat’s goal is to train, prepare, and enrich sculpture students, to allow them to flourish and create works of lasting physical, conceptual, and visual power.

The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is committed to helping talented and motivated students pay for school. Each year, 75 to 80 percent of all SMFA students receive financial aid. Total aid awarded for the 2007–2008 year was $12,182,740, of which $5,160,206 was awarded directly from the School.

The School offers both need-based and merit-based aid. Merit scholarships are awarded on the strength of a student’s portfolio and potential for growth as an artist in the Museum School community. All students are reviewed for merit scholarship if they meet the admissions deadline. Merit scholarships range from $3,000 to full tuition and are renewed annually while a student is enrolled at the Museum School.

Please note that if you’re applying to the five-year Combined-Degree Program or the Master of Art in Teaching in Art Education, you must apply to the Museum School and Tufts University simultaneously.

Mount Ida College’s Computer Animation major prepares students to translate creative concepts into objects, characters and motion. Computer animation skills are used in a variety of fields, including advertising, entertainment, interactive media, and businesses that rely on dynamic presentations and simulations.

The program is offered within the College’s School of Design and includes coursework in graphics, motion, storyboarding, scripting, post-production techniques and publicity.

Students compose an animation demo reel and conclude the program with a senior thesis consisting of a short animated film to be included in a public show.
