The photography department emphasizes the use of the photographic medium as an artistic tool. While some courses address commercial issues, the thrust of the department is toward producing visual artists who use photography as a primary means of expression. A variety of formats are integrated within a curriculum that includes experimental, narrative, and documentary approaches to the medium. Students are trained in B&W and color wet processes, studio practices, digital technologies and a variety of historical techniques. A senior exhibition marks the culmination of the program of study.

The photography department is housed in Taub Hall and the Renée Samuels Center and supports two multiple-station, black-and-white darkrooms equipped with Beseler 23CII and 45M enlargers, a color lab that includes a Colenta color print processor and Beseler and Durst 4×5 enlargers, film loading and processing rooms, and a finishing area for mounting, matting, and storage. The department maintains a shooting studio outfitted with overhead quartz, fluorescent, and strobe lighting systems, backdrops and assorted camera supports. The studio also contains a 4×5 view camera with a Leaf Aptus digital back and an 8×10 film camera. In addition, there is a large number of 4×5 view camera kits available for individual student use. The department includes a state of the art digital lab equipped with Apple Macintosh computers and a variety of scanners, printers, and digital cameras.

Sheridan’s Applied Photography Program offers a superb education in the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of photography combined with leading-edge technical and practical knowledge and skills. Students learn to meet the demands of major types of commercial photography while developing their imagination and creativity. ADDITIONAL COSTS

Plan to spend approximately $2,000 per year in supplies. Students receive a DSLR camera kit for their exclusive use from September to the end of April each year they are in the program. Program fees also include an external hard drive for file transfers and storage. This hard drive becomes the property of the student. Access to all other equipment is as needed to produce program related assignments. Laptops are provided only for studio and location based image capture. Students are not required to own their own camera or laptop to attend the program.

This program provides instruction in commercial photographic skills and creative photographic processes. Beginning and intermediate photographic
processes and skills are addressed. Other topics include photographic lighting, photographic commercial/illustration, photojournalism,
color lab technologies and portraiture.
Operate film and digital camera systems both inside and outside
the studio to produce commercially viable images.
• Use supplemental lighting systems and controls to make effective
images.
Produce commercial images in the areas of Portraiture,Weddings,
Sports, Editorial, Product, Forensic, and Photojournalism.
• Develop ability to process images using Photoshop, and produce
prints using digital printers.
