This program is designed to provide graduates with sufficient training to qualify for entry-level positions including commercial and portrait studio assistant, technical sales representative, retail sales clerk, management trainee, freelance photographer, and processing technician. Completion of the program will also be beneficial to those planning to major in such areas as communications, public relations, graphic arts, fine arts or journalism. Working professionals seeking to upgrade current skills as well as those interested in personal enrichment will also find this program to be beneficial.

The Photography - Advanced program is a graduate program for those students who wish to gain more experience in a chosen specialty. This one year program prepares the graduate for a career in the area of General, Commercial or Portrait Photography by allowing him/her the maximum exposure possible to studios, computers and individual tutoring by instructors. Each student will produce a convention portfolio, an interactive CD portfolio and an extensive website.

Graduates will be capable of handling many photographic assignments in their chosen option. They will also be able to perform in such areas as digital technicians, photographers and assistants in small and large photographic studios, photo finishing plants, government or other public or private agencies and in their own entrepreneurial businesses

Description:
The Photography Technology program provides graduates with entry-level employment skills in the rapidly changing professional photography field. Following a foundation year of basic photography, digital photography, and general education, art, and business courses, the second year includes specialized courses in lighting, large-format and color. Students select elective courses to help design programs that will prepare them for their individual career goals in the field of photography. The emphasis is on hands-on experience to develop both the creative ability and the technical skills essential to photography careers.

Photography is both a concentration option in the BFA degree program and an option as a minor through the Department of Art and Design. The minor primarily enhances employment opportunities for graduates with degrees in communication studies, art, fine art, and the design areas. The skills utilized by a photographer can also be an asset to anyone who needs to communicate visually.

The Professional Photo-Imaging Program at Langara College trains students in both traditional and digital imaging. Many applications of photography are explored including advertising, architectural, editorial, industrial, photo-journalism, portraiture and scientific. Students develop strong camera techniques and lighting abilities and become adept at lab work, image manipulation and quality control. Graduates are awarded a diploma in Professional Photo-Imaging.

This full-time, two-year program offers a well-rounded educational experience that currently results in a diploma in Professional Photo-Imaging. The curriculum provides solid technical training combined with the business and aesthetic aspects of photography and digital imaging. Students are fully educated in the demanding requirements of the photo-imaging industry.

The Visual Effects & Motion Graphics program helps you to learn how to use your creativity to produce attention-grabbing communication design for film, television, and the Web. Visual effects are responsible for movie trailers, opening film credits, television commercials, animated network identities, and short promos. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as production assistant, assistant designer, visual effect specialist, or broadcast design assistant.

In the Media Arts & Animation program, you’ll develop a strong foundation in drawing, design, and illustration in order to produce traditional 2-D formats. Then, you’ll move into computer generated 3-D formats that make characters and objects come alive. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as animator, computer animator, digital media producer, special effects artist, background designer, computer artist, layout artist, or video game artist

In the Computer Animation program, you’ll learn the skills needed to bring characters to life using computer software. Computer Animation is part acting, part storytelling, and part visual art. You’ll study methods to create realistic movement in 3-D digital environments, and collaborate within a team environment to gain practical experience. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as 3-D character animator, computer animator, modeler, and storyboarder.

Animation involves bringing artwork and characters to life with such precision that they truly seem real. Animation is part acting, part storytelling, and part visual art — it’s a mix of both electronic arts and traditional animation skills. In the Animation program, you’ll study methods to create realistic movement in 3-D digital environments, and collaborate within a team environment to gain practical experience. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as 3-D character animator, modeler, and storyboarder.

Students in the 3D Modeling for Animation & Games program prepare for their future in the computer generated animation industry through a combined focus on traditional artistic skills and modern technology. You’ll attend courses on sculpture, life drawing, and color theory, as well as character modeling, lighting, and digital imaging. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as character modeler, texture artist, and junior production designer.
