This major prepares students for a wide range of careers in photography by providing a solid grounding in traditional photography and digital imaging. In the sophomore year, students receive in-depth training in craft and ideas fundamental to photographic imaging. Technical exercises emphasize electronic imaging as well as traditional black-and-white and color processes. The curriculum covers both descriptive photography and more experimental manipulated image-making.

During the junior year, students consider photographic forms beyond the traditional print, such as the photographic book, non-silver processes, and installation work. Large-format photography and studio practice with its control of artificial lighting are also part of the junior curriculum. In both the junior and senior years, students may pursue the study of specialized interests on an elective basis, including illustration and editorial photography, photojournalism, environmental portraiture, creative portfolio development, advanced digital imaging, and professional practice.

The senior year is primarily devoted to the production of an independent body of work of the student’s own choosing and direction. The senior thesis provides the opportunity to begin the process of self-definition as photographer and artist. A required junior-level course in photographic criticism, coupled with required classes in the history of photography, exemplifies the strong emphasis that the department places on critical thinking and self-expression in words as well as through photographs.

The Animation program in the Media Arts Department prepares students to work in computer, traditional, stopmotion, and experimental animation. The basic principles of animation can be applied to all forms of image and object manipulation. The program gives its graduates a strong understanding of timing and motion, and a grounding in the wide variety of techniques available to the animator. Animation majors get a solid background in life drawing and traditional modes of animation, as well as 2D and 3D computer animation. Animation majors choose the area(s) on which to focus as they construct their junior and senior thesis films.

The Art – Photography Option prepares students to continue their studies in fine art photography at an art school. Combining the offerings from both the Art and Photography Departments in the logical sequence prescribed will facilitate transferability of courses.

The Art – Photography Option leads to the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree for students planning to transfer to baccalaureate programs or professional schools after study at Community College of Philadelphia. This curriculum prepares students for either a B.F.A. degree or a major in art history. The curriculum has been designed to parallel the foundation program of any art school or four-year college, most specifically those institutions in the Philadelphia area.

Because transferability is most important, students will develop their skills accordingly and prepare a comprehensive portfolio. This foundation program will allow students to continue their studies leading to careers in such areas as graphic communications, art education, art therapy and the fine arts. Program Entry Requirements:
Applicants to the program must submit a portfolio with 10 pieces of original art work to demonstrate ability, talent and originality, though potential rather than competence is the measure for admission.

Students are required to take the College’s placement tests at their time of entry. Students identified as needing developmental course work must satisfactorily complete the appropriate English and mathematics courses as a part of their degree program.

Program of Study and Graduation Requirements:
To qualify for the A.A. degree in Art, a student must complete a minimum of 66 credit hours as prescribed and attain a grade point average of 2.0 (“C” average). Note: All three-credit studio courses, with the exception of ART 290, require six contact hours.

All Visual Art and New Media students must maintain a 2.0 average in the Visual Arts and New Media Foundation Program. B.A. students must maintain a 2.0 in all Visual Arts and New Media courses to remain in the program, B.F.A. students must maintain a 2.0 in all Visual Arts and New Media courses and a 3.0 in all major courses to remain in their B.F.A. major. Students may repeat courses to improve their class standing. All Visual Arts and New Media students (B.A. and B.F.A.) must submit an exit portfolio documenting their senior work and complete a senior assessment report to remain on file in the department. B.F.A. students will submit the required material during ART 460: Senior Seminar. B.A. students are required to submit this material to their advisors prior to graduation approval. The material must be in their file to receive final approval to apply for their degree.

In their final semester at Fredonia, all B.F.A. students are required to enroll in ART 460: Senior Seminar to present an exhibition of their work. B.A. students are also encouraged to enroll in the course to exhibit their work, but participating is not a graduation requirement. Most B.F.A. students will exhibit their work in the Senior Exhibition held in the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center Gallery, although some students may choose to exhibit in another venue for course credit.

Admission decisions are made on the basis of an applicants’ portfolio, academic records, and personal characteristics, without consideration of financial need. Candidates seeking financial aid are encouraged to file the FAFSA form as early as possible so that the Office of Student Financial Assistance can review the aid application once the admission decision has been made.

MassArt seeks to create a supportive environment in which students and faculty from diverse backgrounds can learn from one another. The admissions committee values differences in age, life experience, education, extracurricular involvement, and racial, ethnic, and/or cultural background.

Admission to MassArt is extremely competitive. Each year, the number of applicants far exceeds the number of spaces available. This is true at all levels of admission, although the competition for specific programs may vary from year to year.
First-Time Freshmen
The foundation program offers first-year students a solid grounding in a wide variety of studio techniques and media.

First-time freshmen applicants are admitted to the studio foundation program, which is MassArt’s curriculum for first-year students. As its name suggests, the program introduces students to the fundamentals of various art and design disciplines. Students are required to complete the foundation program before choosing a major.

Applicants who have not had any formal education beyond high school are considered first-time freshmen applicants, even if they have been out of high school for several years.

Please note that MassArt does not consider applications from students who do not have a high school diploma or equivalency.

Awards and Enrichment
Visual Arts and New Media students have departmental as well as campus wide scholarship possibilities. The Alford Bjurlin Scholarship, the George W. Booth Scholarship, the Marano-Gnirke Scholarship, the Robert W. Marvel Scholarship, the Chautauqua Craft Alliance Scholarship and Fredonia Potters Co-op Awards are given to exceptional Visual Arts and New Media majors. Additional scholarships are often available through portfolio competitions on a regional or national level.

The studio and classroom experience is enriched by participation in the student clubs Art Forum, Media Arts Club and AIGA. Student members of these clubs have visited major art museums and studios in New York, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Cleveland and have attended photography, sculpture, ceramic and design conferences and workshops around the country.

Internships are available and encouraged for students who want practical experience in addition to course work in their chosen major. The department, as well as the Office of International Education and Internships, will assist students in arranging internships either in the United States or abroad.
