The illustration major engages in a rigorous study of technical skills, critical thinking and problem solving through various media, materials and techniques. As an illustration major, you will become competent using both traditional media such as pencils, ink and paint, as well as emerging media including PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign. You will understand the breadth of this field by completing studio projects in representational, conceptual and narrative illustration. You will be expected to become expert in at least one of these areas of concentration. Your studio work will be supported by discussions of the historical development, aesthetics and contemporary issues unique to illustration. The need for collaboration with professionals in separate but supporting disciplines, and the skills and experiences central to successful entrepreneurship are among the topics covered in the seminar courses. Internships in professional illustration studios and publishing venues will provide valuable experience, insight, and contacts.

“Our curriculum is dynamic and evolves as the demands of the disciplines in art and design practice evolve.”
—Ann Ledy,
President and Chief Academic Officer
The College of Visual Arts welcomes applications from first-year, transfer, and second-degree prospective students interested in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art and design. All applications for admission are evaluated on the basis of portfolio review, statement of interest essay, and records of academic aptitude and performance. Admissions decisions are individualized and take into account all aspects of the applicant’s background.
Now is the time to apply for the fall 2009 semester! Apply online.
We recommend that applicants complete all of the admissions requirements by the end of January. This allows plenty of time to hear back from us, and if eligible, compete for CVA scholarship. Accepted students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 are encouraged to compete. The CVA Scholarship Deadline is March 1.

The Individualized Major (INDI) at CCA provides an opportunity for students to design and follow a personalized program of study. Students must write and present a proposal (e.g., “What I want to do and why I want to do it”), which must be approved.
Students also must be prepared to demonstrate that they have begun one or more bodies of interdisciplinary work, and that they are motivated and capable of working outside departmental structures.
The INDI major exists specifically for students whose work bridges media and disciplines that fall outside regular program and department structures. Students who are working in two or three closely related areas, such as drawing/printmaking/bookmaking or sculpture/wood/ceramics, do not always need to work within the INDI process. In this case, students are advised to work with departmental or area advisors.
The INDI major is meant to serve students who are truly involved with interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary work; or conceptually based work that transcends specific media; or who are working in combinations of 2D, 3D, time-based and writing-based forms.
Before applying to the Individualized Major, students should talk to their advisor and discuss the options of pursuing interdisciplinary work within an existing major. For most students working within an existing major is the best choice.
This is an honors program and it is the student’s responsibility to:
design and propose a personal course of study
follow through in a mature self-guided manner
monitor their own progress for graduation

Whether working as an applied or fine artist, the successful photographer is one who can find the most appropriate blend of a developed aesthetic and the science and technology of image-making to produce a legible personal statement. The Photography Program at Marywood offers a strong foundation in the technical skills required of the photographer. Traditional media are stressed, while developments in digital imaging are embraced. Fluency in the medium is enriched and expanded by the study of aesthetics and art/photographic history, as well as through class discussions and critiques, which emphasize the development of the voice of the individual as artist. The relationship of photography to other disciplines, such as illustration and graphic design, is explored in projects involving both areas of study. Marywood’s flexible program is designed to meet the individual needs of the aspiring photographic professional.
