MA Scheme in Creative Media Arts at South Bank University United Kingdom

About the course
All our part-time masters courses whether in arts management, new media, photography, video, media studies or creative writing are project-centred. They are also taught in a way that is designed to fit in with the other commitments of your life. People come to us with a particular project in area of media or arts that they would like to study or develop and we provide the right tutor with specialist, tailor-made guidance to help nurture the skills, critical cultural language and learning approaches needed to make the project come to life. We can provide practical and academic expertise in projects in the areas of arts management, creative and media writing (journalism, poetry, fiction, short stories, scriptwriting for film, theatre, radio and video games), digital film (both theory and practice), digital photography, media and cultural studies and new media including web, interactive installations and video games. Students also have access with specialist technical support to London South Bank’s Digital Media Laboratories, with production facilities in digital photography and soundscaping, digital edit suites, interactive new media and new media writing, as well broadcast quality cameras. Students can showcase work in one of our two new theatres, or our digital media lab, as well as various exhibition spaces.

Forms of Assessment

Projects are assessed either purely through academic written work or the production of a completed project. This might be some professional or creative writing, a digital video production, a new media production, arts management practice, an academic investigation or educational media project. The balance of assessment will depend on the nature of the project and what is agreed with the tutor. Examples of past and present projects include: a film adapation of a novel about the Nigerian Civil War, a web-based interactive soundscape of Battersea Park, an arts policy report about the use of arts brokers in schools , the curation of an art exhibition of Japanese artists, an investigation into women rap artists, an interactive project to improve language learning, a performance poetry web project to encourage new poets, a photography project about identity, beauty and disability, a play exploring cultural memories of race, identity and the Second World War

Dimensions of Study

There are four dimensions of study upon which a core basis of reading is established and through which all projects are tutored and assessed at each stage. The dimensions are: reflexive practice; digital technologies; active learning; and real world contexts. The dimensions of study ensure that all students, no matter what their project, develop a critical cultural language. In addition to the project, students are required to write a 12-15,000 word dissertation. This may or may not be linked to their project in terms of its theme or area of interest..
Our tutors have well-established profiles in a number of specialist areas including creative writing, arts curation, game cultures, film theory and practice. Additionally, these tutors have excellent publication and research expertise and are able to offer specialist guidance for a wide range of arts and media projects.
