Course Aims:
This short course will concentrate on improving your visual photography skills and help you realise your pictures using Photoshop. Students will be expected to take photographs on an ongoing basis throughout the duration of the course as part of the assessment procedure.

Course Outline:

• Digital darkroom techniques – learning about dodging and burning

• Selective colouring
• Retouching
• Selection & Masking
• Composing images
• Using the History palette
• Advanced layers

Course Structure:
This course will be offered one evening per week for 10 weeks commencing October 2009.

Entry Requirements:
Completion of Digital Photography and Photoshop Level 1 is compulsory. You will need a digital camera for this course.

Course Fee:
Course fee is €250.

Programme Location:
Tipperary Institute – Thurles and Clonmel.

Due to the demanding nature of the laboratory photography courses, it may be inadvisable for students to take more than two laboratory courses in the same semester.

Photography majors usually own or have access to a manually adjustable 35mm single-lens reflex camera and hand-held light meter. Most students will want cameras equipped with normal, wide-angle, and telephoto lens by the time they enroll in Pho 112. Students must supply their own film, photographic paper, and other materials. With the accelerating move towards digital photography in the profession, it is increasingly advisable that Photography students own a good quality digital camera. Students are advised to ask the Photography faculty for guidance in selecting any digital equipment. The University has well-equipped darkrooms and studios and provides a limited amount of other equipment for use by students.

Transfer of credit for Photography courses taken at other institutions may be granted by the University as credit for semester hours; however, transfer students wishing to register for Photography courses more advanced than Pho 111 must consult with the Photography faculty unless transferring from an approved two-plus-two program. Permission to enroll in courses more advanced than Pho 111 will be granted only upon the evaluation of a portfolio of the student’s photographs by one or more members of the photography faculty. This evaluation must take place prior to or during the registration period for the student’s first semester at A&M-Commerce. Substitutions for course requirements may be made only with the approval of the department head. Majors must earn a grade of “C” or better in all Photography courses counted towards degree requirements.

This exciting new course will impart the skills necessary to meet the challenges posed by the latest developments within photographic technology. The course combines the practical and critical study of photography with a strong emphasis on new technologies and enterprise.

With the majority of images being captured, viewed and distributed digitally around the globe, digital photography has become an influential tool in modern communication. Technological advances and the changes in working practices have had an enormous impact on the face of the industry allowing the individual greater creativity.

The course will focus on the latest developments in digital imaging and also aims to develop the critical tools for thinking about the role of photography within contemporary media. You will develop your skills with both analogue and digital capture, production, post production, promotion and distribution.

In collaboration with enterprise partners both inside the university and beyond, you will
contribute to a ‘stock image’ digital library which promotes and sells the work of students. This course prepares you for your future career and provides a live professional environment from your very first day at university.

We will encourage you to explore this rapidly expanding industry and equip you with the entrepreneurial skills required to build your own successful photographic business.

Description:
The Photography Technology program provides graduates with entry-level employment skills in the rapidly changing professional photography field. Following a foundation year of basic photography, digital photography, and general education, art, and business courses, the second year includes specialized courses in lighting, large-format and color. Students select elective courses to help design programs that will prepare them for their individual career goals in the field of photography. The emphasis is on hands-on experience to develop both the creative ability and the technical skills essential to photography careers.

Digital Photography 143 is a beginning course in digital photography. The course includes understanding the camera and its many functions including aperture and shutter speed, depth of field, white balance and ISO to name a few. The course also covers the basic tools in Photoshop as well as photography as an art form and art criticism.
