MA Photography at University College For The Creative Arts

MA Photography at Rochester enables you to explore and develop your photography in a dynamic hands-on learning environment. Through the course you will produce a body of photographic work as well as learn how photography has been used to comment upon social, political and personal agendas.

This course delivers a considered balance of support that develops practical skills and fosters diverse critical approaches to a high standard. This support is provided by internationally renowned staff in a department that encourages experimentation with facilities that allow for a range of working practices. These include state of the art digital technology, Hasselblad HD cameras, high-end digital printing, a full range of analogue equipment and darkrooms as well as specialist workshops on traditional techniques that provide new perspectives on contemporary practice. This balance enables you to establish yourself as rounded professional artists who can formulate ideas in a sophisticated framework whilst also being able to communicate these ideas to others, both visually and verbally. A distinctive feature of the course is an emphasis on publication, enabling you to find creative ways to disseminate your work beyond the academic context and into the public arena.

Applications are welcomed from those looking to work in a hands-on way, who are ready to experiment with alternative strategies and who are willing to challenge perspectives in photography.

IMPORTANT NOTICE – ELQs (Equivalent Level Qualifications)

Please note the following if you are intending to study for an equivalent or lower level qualification: In early September 2007, John Denham, the Secretary of State for the Department of Universities, Innovation and Skills (DIUS) directed the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to withdraw institutional funding for those studying for an equal or lower level qualification (ELQ).

This means that the university you attend will no longer get any subsidy for your fees because the government is going to stop paying for ELQs. At the moment, if you are from the UK or the EU, you pay much lower fees for university courses than someone from ‘overseas’. This is largely because the government, through block grants to universities, pays the difference.

Therefore, if you do already have the equivalent level qualification and are offered and accept a place you will be liable for full cost fees, as yet to be determined, but similar in level to overseas fees.

For further information on ELQs please see the HEFCE website

Note for Overseas Fees

International students from outside the EU pay tuition fees that cover the full cost of their course in the UK. You will be classified as an ‘overseas student’ if:
you have not been ordinarily resident in the UK/EU for the three years immediately prior to the beginning of the course;
for any part of the three years you have been resident in the UK/EU wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education;
you are not ‘settled’ in the UK/EU at a specified date before the start of your course (you are settled if you are ordinarily resident in the UK/EU and have no restrictions on the period that you may remain in the UK/EU)

Entry Requirements of Art Degrees at University College For The Creative Arts

Before offering you a place at the University, we have to be satisfied that you have the potential to complete the course to the required standard. For all courses we use the information you supply on your application form, such as formal academic qualifications and previous experience, to assess your suitability for study. We also use a confidential reference from a previous school or college, from an employer or from another person qualified to comment on your capabilities.

We use a range of methods to assess students’ suitability and courses vary in their particular approach. What is important is that you are well matched to your chosen area of study. Some courses like to interview applicants or use questionnaires as part of the selection process. For most courses, we require a portfolio of visual work to provide evidence of practical and visual ability appropriate to the course you are applying for.

International applicants should note that we will normally accept relevant and equivalent qualifications to those awarded in the UK. For many overseas applicants interviews may not be practical, or may be carried out locally in your own country on behalf of the course’s interviewing panel.

Mature students may apply on the strength of a portfolio and previous experience (or accredited prior learning).
