The mission of the Photography and Digital Imaging Department at Foothill College is to provide the finest of instruction in the use of traditional and contemporary photographic techniques for the vocational and avocational student. Majoring in photography with an emphasis in traditional or digital imaging will provide the student with basic aesthetic principles as well as an extensive range of practical photographic techniques needed for college transfer, entry into the photographic workplace, or for artistic expression.
Course work includes black and white processing and printing, digital imaging, color photography, studio lighting, experimental and non-silver processes, zone system techniques, and portfolio preparation. Within the two emphases, students will be encouraged to develop personal, expressive style in addition to achieving technical excellence.

171/2 Digital Photography 3
This hands-on course introduces students to digital imaging processes that include camera acquisition and scanning, digital image correction and compositing, and output to print and digital media. Students will explore raster-based image manipulation in Adobe Photoshop. Students gain foundational skills in photographic composition and digital image manipulation as well as a basic understanding of how digital images may be employed in electronic media and art production.

221/2 Black and White Photography 3
In this introduction to black and white film photography, students photograph in the
field and studio while learning to control and manipulate a camera, process film and produce prints in the dark room.
Students will also explore art concepts and elements of visual language in relationship to both past and present photographic practices.

322 Photography Print and Portfolio Workshop 3
This class offer the opportunity for students to develop an artistic vision as expressed through photography. Using advanced digital black and white and color techniques, they will develop a coherent body of work for gallery and web display. Though class demonstrations concentrate on digital techniques and fine archival printing, students may also pursue independent work concentrating in dark room processes.
Prerequisites: PHOTO 171/2 AND PHOTO 371/2.

381 Alternative Photo Processes 3
Students will experiment with alternative acquisition and printing processes. Acquisition methods will cover pinhole, panoramic and infrared processes. Students will print on alternative forms such as art and Japanese papers, metal surfaces, canvas and other media forms. Prerequisites: PHOTO 171/2 AND either PHOTO 221/2 or PHOTO 371/2.

371/2 Color Photography 3
Digital darkroom work and archival printing from color negatives. Topics include image
capture, color theory, image correction and interpretation, color management, digital
output methods and contemporary practices and theory related to color photography.
Prerequisite: PHOTO 171/2.

462 Studio Photography 3
This class explores aesthetic and technical issues related to photography in a studio
environment. Students learn how to create professional lighting setups in relation to
multiple photographic genres including traditional portraits and more
conceptual/experimental approaches to image-making. Prerequisite: PHOTO 371/2.

472 Advanced Photoshop Studio 3
Students will study advanced Photoshop techniques with special emphasis on
compositing. Working with these tools students can then focus on printing, on
animation in After Effects or web design. Students will create a unified series of prints,

This program offers an associate degree in photojournalism. The primary goal of this degree is to provide the student a foundation of knowledge and technical abilities required in a newspaper photography position or the newspaper photography field. Elective courses allow for preparedness specific to industry. COC AA Degree Requirements

In today’s world, communication of thoughts, ideas, events and products is being accomplished more and more with visual images. Photography professionals are needed to create, process and produce the images of tomorrow, and the College of DuPage Photography program is ready to train them.

Graduates of the Photography degree or certificate programs find employment opportunities in many entry-level jobs in the photographic industry, including portraiture, photojournalism, lab processing specialists, studio photographers, photographer’s assistants and freelance photographers.

A rapidly growing area of the photographic industry is computer enhancement of photographs as digital images are being used more frequently, especially in commercial applications. Demand for photographers who have skills in this new technology is increasing, and it will continue to do so.

To access a wider variety of job opportunities, some students choose to continue their photographic education with a bachelor’s degree. Many take advantage of articulation agreements with Columbia College in Chicago and Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA, that let them begin training at College of DuPage and complete it at one of these well-respected schools.

The photography teaching facilities at College of DuPage are among the finest in the greater Chicago area. The darkrooms are fully equipped, with separate areas for black-and-white and color photography. Studios, used for portraiture, product and fashion photography, have 2 1/4″ x 2 3/4″, 4″ x 5″ and 8″ x 10″ cameras, as well as electronic flash and tungsten lighting equipment. A high-end Macintosh computer lab, equipped with scanners and printers, is used for digital imaging classes.

The Simon’s Rock program in Photography considers technical knowledge, historical background, and critical and analytical skills to be key elements in the education of each photo student. Our curriculum is designed to foster a disciplined approach to independent, self-generated work in each course, whether it be the core studio or a Senior Thesis project. We provide a comprehensive facility with professional equipment, as well as exposure to working artists, historians, writers, and critics, to support the growth and development of each student photographer. We feel that photography by its very nature is a tool which promotes interdisciplinary study. Our program offers a wide range of courses that allow the exploration of the medium of photography by students with interests in the arts and humanities, the sciences, and the social sciences.

Students interested in this concentration should take the core course, Photography, in the first year. It provides each student with an introduction to basic camera and darkroom skills, a background in the history of photography, and a thorough exploration of image making. We recommend that Lower College students in this concentration also take two semesters of basic art history and at least one design module or course.
Curriculum
Three intermediate courses in Photography are required for the concentration. Students are introduced to a variety of photographic approaches and technical skills through courses such as the Writing and Photography Studio and Experiments in Photography and other intermediate visual arts courses that use photo media such as Intermedia Studio, Designing with Computers, Intaglio Printmaking and Silk Screen Printmaking. Either History of Photography, Theories of Photography, or Critical Issues in Contemporary Photography is required, and it is recommended that students in the concentration take two of these courses. Advanced courses include Color Photography Studio, Documentary Photography, Photographic Portrait/Self- Portrait, and the Artists’ Books Studio. Students are required to take at least three of these. The total minimum credits required to complete the Photography concentration is 24.

The Commercial Photography Program offers a two-year multimedia A.A.S. program, which provides comprehensive training for individuals seeking employment in both traditional and digital commercial photography. The program develops strong basic skills in black and white photography, color photography, large format camera techniques, contemporary lighting techniques, studio illustration, digital photography, and electronic imaging. Students learn high quality lab procedures including black and white and color processing as well as digital output, manipulation, and enhancement applications. Students gain experience with 4×5 digital backs, a digital service bureau, and our electronic darkroom of networked Power Macs equipped for large electronic image files.
Career Opportunities

Graduates of this program have training for entry-level or higher employment positions as photographers, photographer’s assistant or laboratory/digital technician in areas of professional photography, including: the general consumer fields of wedding/portrait photography and the commercial fields of advertising, corporate/industrial, and editorial/stock photography. Graduates work as employees of other photographers or in their own business as freelance photographers. There are many opportunities for successful careers in photography, but it is a very competitive profession.

Previous photographic experience is not required, but any art, photography or design experience will contribute to student success in the program.
