The invention of photography more than 150 years ago furthered our awareness of the power of visual culture. The still photograph has contributed to the images we hold in our personal, cultural and global lives. The 18 credit curriculum of MMC’s Photography minor is designed to compliment and intersect many disciplines within the College’s curriculum. The photography minor will provide a solid foundation in the image-making process. Students will study the rich history of the medium, gain hands-on experience through traditional techniques and cutting edge technologies in the pursuit of a personal vision.

Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Marymount Manhattan College is amid one of the richest concentrations of art and photography in the world. MMC is within walking distance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Frick Collection, the Guggenheim Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and numerous galleries. Art majors and minors at Marymount Manhattan benefit from this wealth of cultural institutions as extensions of the classroom experience.

Both black and white and color photography are integral to the department’s approach to visual literacy. Emphasis is placed on the student’s personal growth and aesthetic development, technical facility in mechanical areas, and a thorough understanding of photography’s place in history and its different forms and applications. Primarily through the production of artworks, as well as through lectures, demonstrations, and readings, students become acquainted with the position of photography in contemporary art. Fine art photographers who work in a wide variety of genres are studied.

Herron’s photo facilities include multiple black and white labs, individual color darkrooms, special problem processing areas, a computer lab, a shooting studio, and a gallery. Faculty members who are dedicated to their own professional development and set high standards for the department teach the curriculum. Techniques covered in the program include basic and advanced black and white printing, Type-C color printing, Ilfochrome color printing, non-silver alternative processes, and developing control. In addition, mixed media, installation, time-based electronic media, digital imaging, video, use of the view camera, and studio lighting are taught. The department also provides students with access to professional equipment, including medium format and 4×5 view cameras, light kits, light meters, tripods, Polaroid equipment, and video cameras.

BHSU has among the finest darkroom and digital imaging facilities in South Dakota and surrounding region with black and white and color labs, film developing area and imaging lab. The digital imaging lab is complete with multiple Mac computers, scanners, and various large format and desk-top printing stations.
Basic Black and White Photography– The introductory course in photography for students wishing to major in the area or for those who just have a general interest in photography. Basic camera functions and darkroom techniques, including processing, printing, and digitalizing black and white photographs are discussed in this course. Weekly critiques help students sharpen compositional and aesthetic skills.
Photojournalism– In this course you will discuss photography as it relates to the media and the public. Learning to tell a story using both still and video imagery is also stressed. The course emphasizes the content and design of photo essays and legal and ethical aspects of photography.
Digital Photography– This course will introduce you to techniques and software used to produce digital imagery. A variety of photo manipulations and graphics software will be used with digital and conventional cameras.
Advance Black and White Photography– This course expands on basic photography knowledge and introduces you to alternative techniques and processes in the black and white area. This course allows you to develop your own style of photography and helps you to create your portfolio. As with most photography courses there are weekly critiques.
Color Photography– This course is an introduction to basic color photography. In this course, you will learn darkroom and digital techniques for printing color images as well as alternative processes, such as Polaroid transfers.
Contemporary Issues in Photography-- This course changes from year to year. It is designed to allow you to further expand on areas that interest you and build your portfolio. You are encouraged to use and experiment with a variety of photographic processes and mediums, such as digital, black and white, color, or alternative processes.
Studio Lighting-- This course is designed to give you an overview of studio and commercial lighting. In this course you will learn how to use a wide range of studio lighting equipment and lighting techniques. This is a great course if you are considering studio product or portraiture photography as a career.
