The Department of Fine & Performing Arts (DFPA) includes the disciplines of dance, fine arts, music, and theatre. We offer majors and minors in art history, ceramics, drawing and painting, photography, visual communication, music, theatre, musical theatre, and dance. With over 400 declared majors and minors, the DFPA is one of the largest departments in the College of Arts & Sciences. There are more than 100 fine & performing arts events during the year. The Major and Minor programs in Photography acknowledges photography as a discipline with a distinct artistic and historical identity. It also recognizes that contemporary photographic practice encompasses a rich multiplicity of formal and conceptual approaches. The course structure of the program and the orientation of its faculty reflect a concern that the student receives a strong historical and theoretical understanding of the medium. The program stresses the need for students to acquire the concepts and vocabulary necessary for critical discussion of photographic work; their own and that of others. Emphasis is placed on photography’s social, as well as artistic, ramifications. Both a Major and a Minor program are offered.

The Department of Studio Arts offers programs that emphasize the importance of practical work with practicing artists. Through a series of courses in ceramics, drawing, fibres, intermedia/cyberarts, painting, photography, print media, and sculpture, students increase their awareness of what constitutes creativity and understanding of the aesthetic and intellectual aspects of art today.

The Individualized Major (INDI) at CCA provides an opportunity for students to design and follow a personalized program of study. Students must write and present a proposal (e.g., “What I want to do and why I want to do it”), which must be approved.

Students also must be prepared to demonstrate that they have begun one or more bodies of interdisciplinary work, and that they are motivated and capable of working outside departmental structures.

The INDI major exists specifically for students whose work bridges media and disciplines that fall outside regular program and department structures. Students who are working in two or three closely related areas, such as drawing/printmaking/bookmaking or sculpture/wood/ceramics, do not always need to work within the INDI process. In this case, students are advised to work with departmental or area advisors.

The INDI major is meant to serve students who are truly involved with interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary work; or conceptually based work that transcends specific media; or who are working in combinations of 2D, 3D, time-based and writing-based forms.

Before applying to the Individualized Major, students should talk to their advisor and discuss the options of pursuing interdisciplinary work within an existing major. For most students working within an existing major is the best choice.

This is an honors program and it is the student’s responsibility to:
design and propose a personal course of study
follow through in a mature self-guided manner
monitor their own progress for graduation

The major in studio art gives a thorough education in the traditions of twentieth-century drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture. In addition to extensive studio courses, the major covers the history of art and its role in contemporary society.

The introductory two-term sequence, called Theory and Techniques of Studio Art, focuses on developing the fundamentals of visual language. The major culminates in Open Studio and the Senior Show, immersing the student in building and exhibiting a body of work.

The minors in ceramics, painting, photography, sculpture and printmaking each have a strong foundation in the basic requirements of an art major, as well as in-depth experiences in one of the department’s program areas, ensuring that each student has a broad understanding of the visual language and is able to articulate visual ideas.
