Documentary Studies

The Documentary Studies Program at the College of Santa Fe offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in documentary studies emphasizing the collaborative application of documentary methodologies – especially photography, film, and non-fiction writing – to the study of society. The Documentary Studies program is inherently interdisciplinary and draws upon the perspectives offered by literature, history, and the social and environmental sciences to generate fresh understanding of social and cultural change and the challenges faced by people and communities throughout the Southwest, the nation, and the world. The program particularly encourages cross-cultural and international fieldwork, utilizing a close partnership with Sebastião Salgado and the Instituto Terra in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

It is not enough to “get” the story. One needs to be able to tell it, powerfully and persuasively. Documentary Studies majors will hone their abilities as writers, photographers, filmmakers, and aural historians. They will learn to produce and disseminate their projects by means of the internet and digital technologies and more traditional forms-books, articles, photographic portfolios, and conventional films and videos. They will become communicators of the first rank.

The goal of the Photography Department is to provide students with a comprehensive education in the theory, techniques, history and ethics of photography which, integrated with a strong foundation in other visual & liberal arts, provides the knowledge and perspective essential for the pursuit of the medium as a humanistic endeavor, a creative professional or advocate.

The Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are offered in Photography. The Bachelor of Arts is also offered in Documentary Studies.

The B.A. allows for broad exploration in studio and history of photography, while the B.F.A. offers a more focused and comprehensive program. All degree programs include both analog and digital technologies and practices in our state of the art facilities.

Finding and capturing memorable images requires a diverse array of attributes. Problems must be solved quickly and creatively, while maintaining focus and vision. The Professional Photography Program at Brooks Institute is designed to teach students the skills and talents required for a rewarding professional photographic career.

From day one hands-on instruction and practice provide the technical expertise which forms the foundation of future work. Through concentrated experience in the studio, students can learn how to manipulate and control lighting and exposures, compose people and still life compositions and produce images on a variety of film and digital formats.

Brooks offers a variety of professional photography degree program areas including a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Photography and a Masters of Fine Arts in Photography.

The mission of the Department of Art is based upon four objectives: 1) To introduce students to the visual arts through lectures, discussions, and studio experiences; 2) To provide a current and timely preparation for the studio artist or graphic designer; 3) To prepare effective artists/teachers to teach art to private and public school students from preschool to grade twelve, as prescribed by the Minnesota State Department of Education and the Minnesota Board of Teaching in accordance with current educational standards; 4) To acquaint students with the history of art and its function as a global language.

In meeting our mission we prepare art and design students to:
develop the capacity to identify and solve problems within a variety of physical, technological, social, and cultural contexts;
become familiar with and develop competence in a number of art and design techniques;
understand the components and processes integral to work in the visual arts and design;
acquire capabilities to integrate art and design knowledge and skills;
understand critical, cultural, and historical contexts of visual arts and design.

The department offers course work pursuant to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.

With Regent’s Bachelor of Arts in Animation program, you will learn the art of animation using the most technologically advanced communication facilities on the East Coast. Using cutting-edge computer and design studios and the most advanced animation software, you’ll study character and graphic design, gestures, perspective and composition under industry experts.

The B.A. in Animation major provides students with an education in art, design, and technology to develop the basic skills needed to perform the standard phases of animation: conceptualization, modeling and construction, texturing, animation, digital cinematography, and post production. The program combines traditional and digital skills.

The Department of Art offers programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Fine Arts. The department is committed to creative research that investigates the relationship between inquiry and practice and how this dynamic manifests itself in contemporary and historical approaches to cultural production in a continually changing world.

The two-year program provides graduate students with the opportunity to explore studio production and theoretical work in a flexible structure that encourages individual development within an interdisciplinary context. The department stresses the importance of a rigorous understanding of the conditions in which art is produced. Students are exposed to methodologies of inquiry that foster innovative and problem-solving skills necessary for artistic development and creative production.

The program’s internationally accomplished faculty are actively engaged in a range of disciplines and areas that include art and cultural theory, art history, film, video, sound, architecture, digital media, print media, photography, performative studies, painting, spatial arts and related courses in the Humanities, Sciences and Engineering. A significant number of the permanent faculty hold joint or affiliate appointments with other departments such as the Media Arts & Technology graduate program, History of Art and Architecture, Asian American Studies, Comparative Literature and Film Studies. The department also maintains affiliate appointments with current faculty in History of Art and Architecture, English and German & Slavic Studies.

Students are given the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty who are involved in a wide range of research practices. In conjunction with an intensive curriculum which includes theory, studio critique seminars, professionalism, a range of directed media research courses, and the department’s visiting artist lecture symposia, the study program provides graduate students with direct exposure to professional artists who visit individual graduate students’ studios.

The department wishes to attract motivated students who will benefit from interaction with a diverse and challenging faculty in an environment that offers focused research within a compelling natural setting while gaining exposure to the opportunities presented in the urban centers of Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Bachelor of Arts In Art History

Students majoring in art history take a total of 12 courses (36 hours) in art history and 3 courses (9 hours) outside of art history that complement their studies in the field. Basic survey courses and a seminar on art historical theory and method are required for all majors, as is a range of courses in each of four broad periods and cultures. Students can also develop proposals for independent research or projects related to internships, for which, with faculty approval they can receive academic credit.

The Houston community is a rich environment in which to study art and art history. Its large and diverse range of art collections include, among others, the renowned Museum of Fine Arts and its branches in decorative arts, the Museum of Printing History, and the Menil Collection, which have permanent collections. The Holocaust and Contemporary Arts Museums, and the Center for Contemporary Craft, as well as many alternative art spaces and galleries focus on traveling exhibitions. Art History students are encouraged to avail themselves of these collections for coursework, internships, and general self-enrichment.
Careers

An undergraduate major in art history develops special skills in writing, critical thinking and analysis of visual and cultural information that can provide the basis for a variety of professional careers. The two main career paths for those who wish to continue working directly in the arts are: curatorial and administrative positions in art museums and galleries; and teaching and research in art history. Curatorial work at major art museums, as well as teaching art history at a college or university level both usually require further graduate study in art history. Students can apply to both (terminal) M.A. programs in art history as well as doctoral programs that offer both the M.A., and the Ph.D.. Graduates of (terminal) M.A. programs often go on to pursue the Ph.D. at other institutions.
Internships

Art history majors with an art history GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible for internships. Interns learn about the operation of for-profit and non-profit art institutions by working as gallery assistants, curatorial and research assistants, and in educational programming and preparations departments, including: the Blaffer Gallery of the University of Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Menil Collection; Lawndale Art Center; Diverseworks, the Museum of Natural Science; the Holocaust Museum, the Museum of Printing History, and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Specific information regarding eligibility, requirements and opportunities is available from the faculty and from the undergraduate advisor. Students may develop proposals for academic credit connected with an internship in consultation with art history faculty.
