Student quotes

“What I appreciate most is the energy and depth in the critical debate which takes place in and around lectures, tutorials and the darkrooms.”

“I looked at courses at several universities but was told that if I was serious about studying documentary photography I had to come to Newport. From the moment I came through the gates and from the warm reception I was given I knew this was the place I had to come to study. I felt at home here – the landscape really reminds me of New Zealand.”

What it’s about

You will benefit from the fact that the award is able to draw on two rich traditions: that of the industry itself and that of the designer-maker, or studio potter. The course covers a wide range of activities; at one extreme the disciplines needed to become a designer in the contemporary ceramic industry, at the other, a self-motivated exploration of imagery in clay. The aim of the course is to give all our students a broad experience of the materials and processes used in the making and decorating of ceramics. This can then be used to allow you to explore the techniques and approaches that are of most interest to you.

What you do

This course forms part of the suite of 3D Design awards, comprising: BA(Hons) 3D Design: Ceramics, BA(Hons) 3D Design: Interior Products, BA(Hons) 3D Design: Crafts and BA(Hons) 3D Design: Contemporary Jewellery and Fashion Accessories. All the awards have a common structure that provides the generic core skills and understanding required to be a successful 3D Designer as well as having a distinct curriculum aimed at developing the specialist knowledge required to be successful
within Ceramics.

At Level 1 you will focus on basic 3D design skills acquisition. You will explore a range of media including ceramics, metal, wood and plastics in order to confirm your future direction and to broaden your creative experience. In the second half
of the year you will focus on your chosen pathway and gain further specialist design and making skills through undertaking projects specific to Ceramics.

At Level 2 common core modules focus on developing understanding of different design approaches relevant to your chosen pathway. Option modules provide an opportunity to develop further Ceramic specific knowledge and practical skills by following modules in surface pattern, ceramic surfaces or plaster prototyping.

At Level 3 you will undertake a negotiated project within your specialism. In addition, you will follow common professional development modules that equip you with the knowledge needed for careers in design and the creative industries.
Modules are project-based and delivered through a combination of integral studio work, demonstrations, practical workshops, tutorials, critiques, seminars and lectures. You will be able to determine through academic and technical guidance, a personal approach to Ceramics.

Where next

The career paths followed by ceramics graduates will be varied, some will work in studio workshops, others will seek employment in the ceramic industry here and overseas. Some will choose to further their study by making application to our own MA course.
