What is Animation?
Animation is a discipline that includes everything from traditional, character-based narrative to experimental work. It is an increasingly malleable and sophisticated art form that is well-positioned to take full advantage of ongoing technological development.

Why study Animation at UArts?

The University of the Arts offers a broad base in traditional hand-drawn animation, computer animation, and under-the-camera animation (clay, puppet, cut-out, paint-on-glass, etc). The UArts Animation degree program encourages the development of well-rounded artists in possession of a strong sense of personal vision and solid, technical competencies in all aspects of content creation.

What’s the Animation degree program like?

• Sophomore year: an introduction to the techniques of drawn and under-the-camera animation, 2D and 3D computer animation, and live-action film via a series of exercises and two final projects.
• Junior year: creation of a short personal piece, as well as client-based and interdisciplinary group projects.
• Senior year: studies culminate in a thesis project that demonstrates the ability to successfully complete a longer, festival-worthy piece.

Are the faculty practicing animators?
Yes. They include award-winning artists whose animation work has screened both nationally and abroad, notably at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; New York’s Museum of Modern Art; the Philadelphia, Ottawa, and Hiroshima International Animation Festivals; and many others. Our instructors come from a diverse mix of fine-art and commercial backgrounds, combining technical expertise with a strong sense of personal vision.

Animation Degree at Art Institutes

Animation involves bringing artwork and characters to life with such precision that they truly seem real. Animation is part acting, part storytelling, and part visual art — it’s a mix of both electronic arts and traditional animation skills. In the Animation program, you’ll study methods to create realistic movement in 3-D digital environments, and collaborate within a team environment to gain practical experience. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as 3-D character animator, modeler, and storyboarder.

Animation Degree at Algoquin College

This three-year program provides students with training in both traditional and digital animation. Following the first year of study in traditional animation techniques, students have the option of pursuing either traditional or digital animation. They learn the skills necessary to work effectively as animators in a variety of settings. Graduates acquire the skills necessary to work independently, collaboratively, and in studio settings.

Animation Degree at Royal College Of Art

The Animation Department offers a vibrant environment in which students are enabled to extend the study and practice of animation and to develop their individual voice. The focus of the MA course is on directing animation. Students create a number of projects and develop their ability to express an idea through moving image.

Animation Degree at Madison Area Technical College

The Associate of Arts Degree in Animation offers courses in traditional and digital presentation and manipulation of graphic elements necessary for the acquisition of skills in Animation. The program assists students in developing a broad foundation of skills and knowledge in animation addressing such topics as: introduction, intermediate and advanced animation, drawing fundamentals, design and color, digital 3D, illustrative figure drawing, digital cinematography, level and set design, digital post-production, media/broadcast animation and the opportunity for a 3D animation internship and production of an animation portfolio.
